  • What Do Women’s Health Services Include?

Women’s health services typically include a well-woman exam or other screenings or physical tests focused on the unique health needs of female individuals. They allow a healthcare provider like Dr. Gujarati to assess a woman's health and provide preventive screenings and services. Here are the most common tests and services that may be performed:

    • Medical history review: A thorough review of personal and family medical history to understand potential genetic risks and identify any lifestyle factors that may affect health.
    • Physical examination: A general physical exam often includes checking vitals such as blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, and temperature.
    • Breast exam: A clinical breast exam to check for abnormalities or changes in the breast tissue that may indicate potential issues like cancer.
    • Pelvic exam: This involves physically and visually examining the reproductive organs. This could include the external genitalia, the vagina, the cervix, and sometimes a bimanual examination (feeling) of the uterus and ovaries.
    • Pap smear: This is usually performed during the pelvic exam. Cells from the cervix are collected and tested for abnormalities. This test can help detect cervical cancer in its early stages.
    • Human papillomavirus (HPV) test: Often conducted along with a Pap smear, it checks for high-risk HPV strains that are most likely to cause cervical cancer.
    • Sexually transmitted infections (STI) testing: Tests for infections such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, HIV, and others, depending on a woman's sexual history and risk factors.
    • Bone density screening: For women over 65, or those at high risk, this test measures bone mass to screen for osteoporosis.
    • Mammography: This is an X-ray of the breast used to detect breast cancer. Women are typically advised to get annual mammograms starting at age 40 or 50, depending on their risk factors.
    • Blood work: This could include a full blood count, cholesterol test, blood glucose test, thyroid function test, and others, based on the woman's age, health history, and risk factors.
    • Vaccinations: Updating immunizations as necessary, such as the flu shot, HPV vaccine, and others, based on age and risk factors.
    • Lifestyle discussion: Conversations about diet, exercise, sleep, stress, tobacco and alcohol use, and mental health.

  • What Is a Pap Smear?

Women of all ages are susceptible to developing irregular cells, so a Pap smear is an important preventive measure. This routine screening detects any abnormal cells in the cervix that could potentially lead to cervical cancer. At UpCare Clinics, Dr. Priya Gujarati provides Pap testing and annual well-woman exams at our Olathe, KS office. If abnormal cell growth is discovered, our team will take proper steps to ensure you receive immediate treatment. Dr. Gujarati offers compassionate care and takes time to listen to each patient's individualized concerns. Schedule your visit with us today.

  • Protect Your Health With Regular Pap Smears and Well-Woman Exams

A Pap smear is a crucial screening test that evaluates the health of a woman's cervical cells. An abnormal result can signal the presence of precancerous changes in the cervix, making early diagnosis and treatment essential. Additionally, your doctor can use a Pap test to check for HPV, a sexually transmitted disease that is a leading cause of cervical cancer.

At UpCare Clinics, we are dedicated to providing advanced care for women with abnormal Pap test results, including HPV. We believe in taking a proactive approach to women's health, which is why we also offer well-woman exams to address any health concerns you may have. Don't wait until it's too late; schedule your Pap smear and well woman exam today and take control of your health. Trust UpCare Clinics to provide you with the highest level of care.

  • What Are the Benefits of a Pap Smear?

A Pap smear is crucial for ensuring proper reproductive health and cervical function. In addition to checking for abnormal cervical cells, a Pap smear can check for HPV. Benefits of a Pap smear test conducted at UpCare Clinics in Olathe, KS include:

    • Identifying unusual and potentially cancerous cells in the cervix
    • Early cancer prevention
    • Peace of mind that your reproductive system is functioning normally
    • Screening for HPV, which can lead to cervical and pelvic health issues
  • Who Should Get a Pap Smear?

We recommend getting a Pap smear once every three years if you are between the ages of 21 and 65 (depending on risk factors). Some people with additional risk factors may need them annually.

  • Maximize the Accuracy of Your Pap Smear: Follow These Simple Pretest Guidelines

Getting an accurate result from your Pap smear is crucial for your health and well-being. To ensure the most accurate results, it's important to follow a few simple guidelines before your test.

Firstly, schedule your Pap smear for a time when you are not on your period. Secondly, avoid sexual intercourse and any vaginal medications or douching for at least 48 hours prior to your test.

By following these guidelines, you can increase the accuracy of your Pap smear and ensure that any potential health concerns are detected early on. Book your appointment today and take the first step towards maintaining your reproductive health.

  • How Is a Pap Smear Performed?

A Pap smear is quick and performed as part of your yearly well-woman exam at UpCare Clinics. You will be asked to position yourself on an exam table with your feet placed in stirrups before a speculum is inserted into the vagina to obtain a tissue sample from your cervix. You may feel some pressure as Dr. Gujarati uses a specialized swab to scrape a sample of cells from your cervix. The tissue sample will be sent to the lab for testing. Following your Pap smear, you will be free to get back to your usual activities. You might have some slight cramping or mild bleeding, but this shouldn't last for more than a couple of days. In the event of an abnormal Pap test, our office will notify you as soon as possible. We will let you know the next steps regarding follow-up testing and treatment for abnormal Pap smears.

Pap Smear FAQs

  • Can Pap smears detect cancer?

No. While a Pap smear can detect abnormalities in cervical cells, it cannot detect cancer. If we detect an irregularity after your Pap smear, we will conduct additional testing at our Olathe, KS facility to determine if the cells are precancerous.

  • How often should I get a Pap smear?

In general, women between the ages of 21 and 65 should get a Pap smear at least once every three years. If you are under 30, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that you get a Pap smear done every other year. Women over 30 can wait three years between Pap smears, provided they have had three normal Pap smears in a row.

  • Can I get a Pap smear if I'm pregnant?

Yes, it is safe to get a Pap smear during pregnancy. In fact, Dr. Gujarati often recommends that women get a Pap smear during their first prenatal visit.

  • Can a Pap smear detect sexually transmitted infections (STIs)?

Yes, but only in some circumstances. A Pap smear can be used to detect the human papillomavirus (HPV), a common STI that can lead to cervical cancer. Other STIs, such as chlamydia or gonorrhea, are not detected by a Pap smear and must be screened for using other techniques.

  • Why should I not have a Pap smear during my period?

It's best to schedule your Pap smear at UpCare Clinics when you are not on your period. The presence of menstrual blood could obscure the sample's cervical cells and make it harder to interpret the results.

  • Are Pap smears necessary after a hysterectomy?

If you had a hysterectomy due to a non-cancerous condition, and your cervix was removed, you typically won't need Pap smears anymore. However, if the hysterectomy was due to a cancerous or precancerous condition, or if your cervix was not removed, regular Pap smears may still be recommended.
